Mardi Gras festivities
Come to the dinner in costume, or just wear a mask or
come as you are.
Dress in your favorite outfit with traditional Mardi Gras colors: gold,
green and purple. Awards for best costume and best mask. Carnival style
music and celebration.
The "king"
of the Mardi Gras will be selected at random from the Friday dinner
tickets sold prior to the Roundup. That could be you! The King (or
Queen) will be crowned and will preside over ceremonies, including
chairing the Friday night meeting.
This is going
to be fun, don't miss out on the Mardi Gras Dinner festivities.
This year we are trying some new
things, all of which we are excited about. One of the most exciting
events that we are planning is Friday Nights Mardi Gras Banquet. You may
be wondering why we have chosen to have a Mardi Gras theme when there is
so much hype and publicity surrounding Mardi Gras and drinking, however,
the actual reasons behind Mardi Gras are much deeper.
The
general idea is that it was a celebration before Lent and the fasting
that occurred at that time. Lent begins on Wednesday and the Tuesday
before is a day of feasting or as known to the French, Mardi Gras which
means “Fat Tuesday”. The
Mardi Gras colors are the royal colors of PURPLE which signifies
"Justice," GREEN for "Faith," and GOLD for "Power." These colors were
chosen to resemble a jeweled crown honoring the Wise Men who visited the
Christ Child on Epiphany. For
us, as we enter the doors of Alcoholics Anonymous for the first time, it
is usually after a great period of what we think is celebration but
generally turns out to be tragedy. For why else would we be walking
through those doors? The Comedy and Tragedy mask represents us in a way
that no other can. We are both comedy and tragedy. We grow and change
and are reborn. We eventually find humor in ourselves and others. We are
able to laugh once again even about our tragedies.
To celebrate our recovery is our
main goal. We will be giving away beads and masks and we ask that you
play along with us. Please celebrate with us by dressing with Mardi Gras
flair and style.
Generally,
Roundup committee members are asked to chair the speaker meetings.
However, we know that without you attending our roundup, we wouldn’t
have one. So this year we want to make you a part of it and will chose a
King from banquet attendees to lead the Friday meeting.
We are grateful for your attendance
and we hope that you have a wonderful time here in Laughlin NV.
celebrating our unity and recovery.
